Pets Rescued, Person Critical Following Fire In Northwest DC Apartment Building (Video)

One person was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition after being rescued from an apartment fire in Northwest DC on Tuesday.

DC Fire and EMS personnel were called before noon on Feb. 27 to the 1300 block of Peabody Street NW, where there was a reported fire in the basement of a three-story apartment building. 

Upon arrival, flames and smoke could be coming from the building, and crews rescued one person inside who was taken by paramedics to the hospital with critical injuries. 

Others were rescued by portable ladders, according to the department. A dog was also saved from the building.

The fire was reported knocked down by 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. "A large number" of residents are expected to be displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross and the DC Office of Community Relations and Services.

No details about the cause of the fire has been released by investigators.
